Bush Reduces Environmental Rules

One could argue that the greatest thing that has happened for the environment during Bush’s reign is the high gas prices. Now to reduce those prices Bush wants to temporarily waive clean air rules. At a time when oil companies are reporting record profits Bush thinks waiving environmental standards is the best way to reduce the cost to consumers. To further show that environmental issues are not his strong suit Bush also called for more domestic oil production (goodbye wildlife) and an increase in the use of ethanol. Ethanol actually takes more energy to produce than it yields in combustion, and can result in an increase in hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and fine-soot particles. Not exactly a clean alternative. Of course there’s a much simpler solution Bush conveniently overlooks. Instead of making it easy for us to cheaply fill our Hummers we could simply require that vehicles get higher MPG. That way we could save money and do something good for the environment. David Friedman of the Union of Concerned Scientists says, “The fundamental problem is that the fuel economy of cars and trucks is a disgrace and the world is just consuming too much oil and gasoline”. Well yeah Mr Friedman, but what about the monster truck drivers who won’t be able to put food on the table if we do that? Won’t somebody think of the children?
