Kath Underhill, a second year fine art student, was encouraging people to dress and undress her in the middle of a shopping centre as part of an artistic statement. She told a local newspaper, “It was all about allowing people the right to touch, about tenderness, intimacy, sexuality, and care and having a relationship with strangers. I basically wanted to challenge the role of the female in the art world”. Her artistic publicity stunt was obviously appreciated by some and offensive to others.
One of my pet peeves is when people label anything out of the ordinary as Art, especially anything erotic. Kath’s own message of empowerment (which sounds like an afterthought) seems to fall short. Why does it fall short? Frankly, because her story doesn’t hold our attention unless there are sexy pictures to go with it. Jay Christian Emerte said it best. “In lieu of creativity, there is an undue emphasis on sexuality.”

Come on John, you know that she spent just as much time and thought analyzing the scenario, working out the composition, the colors, and the emotional impact of every movement she would make, as Da Vinci would spend on any of his master paintings.
Oh wait, she was just standing around letting people undress her to indulge her nymphean urges.
I’ve always wondered, do “performance artists” actually make money somehow? Are there schools for performance arts? (besides dancing and such) What could they possibly teach you? The only goal is to do something which hasn’t been done before, and label it “art”, so I’m not sure what they could do besides tell the students what has already been done.
