I Don’t Want No Minuteman

The Minutemen rolled their wagons through Nashville during their 2 week tour of 13 cities in the south and southwest. Their position on illegal immigration was echoed through the bigoted sentiments of people like Tim Williams, “I bought my house 16 years ago and never thought I’d buy into the third world”. One of the Minutemen, Raymond Herrera, voiced a legitimate concern about the economics of undocumented labor affecting the livelihood of his sons, who are both carpenters. Though rather than push for immigration reform to eliminate the effects of slave labor on our economy, Herrera took the extreme right position and joined a delusional group of geriatric vigilantes.
looks like a great partyIn case you don’t know much about the Minutemen, they’re basically a group much like the KKK or BNP who cover their racist agenda with nationalistic rhetoric.

“The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan responded to cultural changes brought about not only by immigration, but also by changes in the American economy and society after the First World War… The Ku Klux Klan attempted to resist challenges to traditional morality by enlisting native, white, Protestant Americans who exhibited character, morality, Christian values, and ‘pure Americanism’.” Sound familiar?

  1. The minutemen aren’t vigilantes. What they do is go to the border, spot illegals crossing, then call the border patrol to pick them up. By your logic calling the police is being a vigilante.

How about you compare them to the Nazis next? You can’t have a debate on immigration nowadays without *one* of the camps tossing out charged buzzwords instead of rational argument.

If any of the two extremes on immigration are being blatantly racist, it’s the pro-illegals. Flying Mexican flags, calling out Viva La Raza! (long live the race? give me a break), saying Europeans stole this land and should go back to Europe, all the brown pride, vitriol against “wasps” and “anglos”, praising the rising percentage of hispanics in America, etc. There’s a double standard, and it’s not hard to see it.

“By your logic calling the police is being a vigilante.”

no, by the definition of vigilante, the minutemen are vigilantes. “One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one’s own hands”. that’s exactly what the minutemen do and advocate. it’s pretty simple.

“You can’t have a debate on immigration nowadays without *one* of the camps tossing out charged buzzwords instead of rational argument.”

where are the rational arguments from the minutemen? they blame undocumented workers for all of society’s woes. this scapegoating towards people they see as un-american is what makes them like the klan. i am against any group which mindlessly scapegoats. the klan and the minutemen are one in the same in this respect. they complain about how miserable our lives are because of a certain group, but don’t really do anything productive to cure the true societal woe. perhaps you can explain how a group essentially named “the militia” who carry shotguns to intimidate opponents is not a radical vigilante group.

“Flying Mexican flags, calling out Viva La Raza! (long live the race? give me a break), saying Europeans stole this land and should go back to Europe, all the brown pride, vitriol against “wasps” and “anglos”, praising the rising percentage of hispanics in America, etc.”

wow, you’re greatly misinformed. where do i begin? mexican flags were greatly outnumbered by american flags at these rallies. you can see any photo from may 1st to confirm that. and who cares anyway? are you against people waving other flags in the united states?

calling out viva la raza? i honestly heard that two or three times amongst the collective 10 hours i spent at 2 rallies. i understood these to be in response to groups like the minutemen or anti-immigration legislation which specifically persecutes latinos. under such pressure, affirming the longevity of your race is no more harmful than singing “i will survive”. viva la raza does not mean death to whitey. anyone who construes it as such is speaking volumes of their fear for non-whites. i also don’t recall anyone saying europeans “should go back to europe”. this is an outright invention. however, i have seen several signs on the opposite side telling people to go back to mexico. there is only a double standard if you believe what fox news or cnn tells you these rallies are about. i suggest you actually attend one instead of using the generalizations in the media as your reference point.

  3. “One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one’s own hands”

How do they take the law into their own hands? They patrol the desert and report illegals crossing. They don’t arrest anyone, or even make any contact whatsoever. It’s no different than calling the police to report any other kind of crime.

“they blame undocumented workers for all of societies woes.”

I’m not interested in the minutemens reasons for watching the border. That doesn’t matter, in my opinion. The *government* should be watching the border, but the government is willfully incompetent, and someone has to do it.

“perhaps you can explain how a group essentially named “the militia” who carry shotguns to intimidate opponents is not a radical vigilante group.”

How do they intimidate opponents? They never make contact with the border crossers. They carry weapons for their own self-protection, as the coyotes and gang members who cross the border will shoot even a border patrol agent, they won’t think twice about shooting a normal american citizen.

    “wow, you’re greatly misinformed.”

I’ve seen the pictures with my own eyes. The worst photos were from the march rally, because that one was spontaneous and they didn’t have as much time to make “official” banners and ensure that everyone had an american flag.

“are you against people waving other flags in the united states?”

Hell, even I would wave a mexican flag on cinco de mayo if I had one. But waving the mexican flag, holding signs that say “chicano power”, viva de aztlan, etc. is a blatantly racist power grab.

“viva la raza does not mean death to whitey.”

Yes, and yelling “white power” doesn’t have any negative connotations for non-whites. Lol.

“i also don’t recall anyone saying europeans “should go back to europe”. ”

I saw the photos, not all of them were that bold, but most said something like “Who are the *real* illegal immigrants, pilgrim?” and stuff like that. Their ignorance of history is astounding, but I guess that’s not a surprise given the standards of California schooling.

“viva la raza does not mean death to whitey. anyone who construes it as such is speaking volumes of their fear for non-whites.”

My elementary school was 97% hispanic, my middle school was 70%, and my highschool 50%. I’ve experienced plenty of the raw vitriol that hispanics have against “anglos”, these are not unfounded generalizations. Hispanics use “viva la raza” in the same context as a white person would use “white power”.

  4. what the minutemen do goes beyond the analogy of simply calling the police when you witness a crime. they actively pursue and get involved with illegals. the fact that a good percentage of them are retired law enforcement should give you an idea about their mindset.

“I’m not interested in the minutemens reasons for watching the border. That doesn’t matter, in my opinion.”

it should matter to you because their reasons dictate their behavior, both now and in the future. grey decon, one of the minutemen, said their efforts “will expand into America itself”. this has already happened to some extent at day labor sites and elsewhere, where minutemen harass people they believe to be illegals. many of the people they harrass are indeed latino US citizens. this is fairly close to the gestapo asking to see your papers.

“They carry weapons for their own self-protection, as the coyotes and gang members who cross the border will shoot even a border patrol agent, they won’t think twice about shooting a normal american citizen.”

this statement goes against your assertion that they are not getting involved directly. the fact, as you’ve stated here, is that what they are doing is dangerous. the real border patrol has denounced the minutemen for this very reason. they’re going out with firearms to confront people who may also be armed. someone is eventually going to be killed. the minutemen also have no training in international human rights and have drawn criticism from human rights organizations because of it. simply put, they are not qualified to do what they’re doing. if anything, they’re simply getting in the way. the minutemen are on the verge of what many consider impersonation of federal officers, but without the training to act responsibly.

“Hispanics use ‘viva la raza’ in the same context as a white person would use ‘white power’”

i completely disagree. this may sound like PC bullshit, but what matters is the context of a phrase, not simply its wording. if “viva la raza” was used at a rally it was used in an inclusionary manner to unite people behind a common cause. “white power” is notoriously used in an exclusionary manner to claim racial superiority over non-whites. the crowds at the immigration rallies were mainly latino, though they consisted of white, asian, and black people as well. they encourage the inclusion of all races to join the cause. “viva la raza” was hardly used not only because of the non-latino population there, but the non-mexican latino population there. however, assuming it was used, this still does not put the phrase on equal standing with “white power”. how many rallies do you know of where latino, black, and asian people can march alongside a majority of white people screaming “white power” without getting brutally beaten?

  5. […] The BNP is a far-right group similar to that of the American KKK. Their main platform is to “preserve” Britain from non-white Britons, and membership is reserved exclusively for “indigenous caucasians”. The BNP also advocates returning all non-white Britons to their countries of origin. British bloggers have criticized the British media and government for keeping silent about this story. Afterall, you’d think the largest terrorist cache would attract some attention, yet none of the national media have covered the threat. It is undeniable to most that the incident surely would have made headlines had the man been a non-white, or a Muslim, or even Irish Catholic. Superintendent Neil Smith confirmed the official stance of British authorities when he was quoted as saying that Cottage was “not a terrorist” and that his home was “not a bomb factory”. Hence, the two men are being tried under the Explosive Substances Act of 1883 rather than under contemporary terrorism legislation. […]
