Nearly Half of all Illegals in U.S. Entered Legally

A study conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center has found that 45% of America’s undocumented migrants actually entered the country legally, on a visa, and overstayed beyond it’s expiration. This puts an end to the myth that undocumented migrants are simply uneducated border-hoppers.

Again, I stand by the fact that the more one learns about illegal immigration, the less of a problem it appears to be. Sure, reform is necessary, but illegal immigration is not the drain on society it’s made out to be. We can all worry ourselves to death over Illegals and gay marriage just as the Republican thinktank wants us to. Though I think a better use of our attention could be spent worrying about how to get Americans out of Iraq, rather than getting Mexicans out of America.

This new War on Immigration will be just as successful as the War on Drugs. We will spend billions each year fighting something which could just as easily influence our economy in a positive way. And like the War on Drugs and War on Terror, we will be fighting a losing battle since there is no plan to actually curb the source of illegal immigration or deal with the hole it will leave in our own society. Acting now and dealing with the consequences later is the same brilliant ideology we used to win over Iraq. All steps taken so far against this “problem” have been empty political gestures meant to satisfy the xenophobe in all of us. The shiny promise of a perfect America has hijacked the rationality of most rational people. We truly are a divided nation with the pool of foreseers dwindling ever smaller with each new terror threat.

  1. According to the INS Statistical Yearbook, you’re correct. I agree, there needs to be immigration reform, but it must be comprehensive and in the interest of liberty and justice. (Yes I know, such idealistic fantasy. On the other hand, it worked for the founding fathers, didn’t it?)
    In the end, this issue is merely, for many people and politicians, just one more red herring, one more smoke screen to distract us from the Real issues taking down this country. Fuck immigration and Gay marriage, how bout stopping the outsourcing of millions of union, living wage jobs to 3rd world countries where they do it for pennies in hazardous, polluted conditions. How bout taking steps to cut off our country’s addiction to foreign oil, which coincidentally would also help ensure our survival over the next 2 centuries. How ’bout an increased investment in our educational system, ranked one of the lowest standards in the world, and I’m not talking about making up just another test either.
    Yeah, you know what, this does indeed sound like a bunch of hippy crap. I guess I’ll go back to watching American Idol and following Britney Spear’s baby drama…
