The United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution on July 13th due to a veto by the US. The draft called for the immediate and unconditional release of the Israel solider abducted by Palestinian groups from Gaza, and for a halt to disproportionate military reaction by Israel. The text condemned Israel’s current military assault in Gaza which it said “has caused the killing and injury of dozens of Palestinian civilians” and destroyed Gaza’s main power station. The draft also called for the release of all Palestinian officials detained by Israel, and that the Palestinian Authority take “immediate and sustained” action to bring an end to the firing of rockets into Israel. The international community was also called upon in the draft to provide emergency assistance to the Palestinian people to help the dire humanitarian situation. The US vetoed the draft on the grounds that it’s “unbalanced”, and claimed that a more “balanced” draft would acknowledge that Israels current actions came in response to attacks.
