Lebanese Prime Minister, Fouad Siniora, appealed to the international community for the rescue of his nation, declaring it a “disaster zone”, and calling for an immediate UN-backed cease-fire. Israeli forces struck at Beirut, the capital, as well as Lebanon’s ports and the border it shares with Syria. Fishing harbors which are usually busy have been inactive since Israel blockaded Lebanon’s coast. “Every day we don’t go out, we don’t have food on the table. I don’t know how much longer we can keep this up,” said one fisherman from the coastal city of Sidon.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Siniora called Israel’s actions that of a “criminal machine”. Israelis, he said, are “punishing all Lebanese collectively, with their actions lacking any moral or legal legitimacy”. Israel has been intensifying its attacks from the air, land, and sea. Cities like Beirut, Tripoli and the Christian cities of Amchit and Junieh are being bombarded. Earlier on Saturday, an Israeli airstrike near Tyre hit a minibus carrying 20 civilians, killing at least 15 of them. The Israeli Defense Forces said, “Responsibility for endangering civilian population rests on the Hezbollah terror organization, which operates and launches missiles at Israel from populated civilian areas.” At least 106 Lebanese civilians have died from the massive Israeli bombing campaign, compared to 13 on the Israeli side.
