An emergency state was declared in Indonesia after a tsunami was triggered by a 7.7 magnitude undersea earthquake. The wave was 2m-high and struck the densely populated island of Java, killing over 337 people of which at least 7 were tourists. This was the third tsunami to fatally hit Indonesia since the famous December 2004 tsunami which claimed over 220,000 lives. A further 165 people are reported missing, 510 are injured, and 52,400 have been evacuated. Hospitals in Pangandaran, the worst-hit area, are struggling to cope with the influx of patients, using limited resources and facilities.

“Patients are pouring in since yesterday and we had to treat them while they sat in chairs or even lay on mats,” Yuyun Rohiat, spokesman at the community clinic in Pangandaran, about 270 kilometers (168 miles) southeast of Jakarta, said in a phone interview today. “We don’t have enough medical workers and facilities so the badly injured patients have been transferred to hospitals” in Ciamis and Banjar districts.

Power to about 2,000 houses was cut after sea water submerged cables. Some help was received when the Health Ministry sent 450 body bags, medical supplies, tents, biscuit rations, and emergency supplies.

Java, the world’s most populated island, supports more than 180 million of Indonesia’s 238 million people. The archipelago sits on the Pacific Rim of Fire, which is marked by hundreds of seismic fault lines. Aftershocks recording magnitudes up to 5.6 are expected to continue.
