The UN’s Emergency relief coordinator has warned of a humanitarian disaster in Lebanon as people abandon their homes to flee Israeli attacks. Over 200 Lebanese civilians have been killed in 6 days of Israeli bombing. Roads in southern Lebanon were clogged with vehicles fleeing to the north. Many of the displaced appear exhausted and bewildered, living in fear that Israeli jets cruising overhead will target them. The UN’s top humanitarian official, Jan Egeland, said air strikes on roads and bridges were hampering relief teams from reaching the displaced. “It’s already very bad, and it is deteriorating by the hour.”

In a surprising twist, Syria has said that its borders are open to anyone of any nationality trying to flee Lebanon. The Syrian embassy said in a statement, “Now, while thousands of United States citizens are stranded in Lebanon attempting to flee the ongoing massacre there, Syria has opened its borders to US citizens as well as citizens of other nationalities. In Syria, US and citizens of other nations find a safe haven from the barbaric and atrocious acts of the Israeli army in Lebanon.” Visa requirements to enter the country have been waived. Syria’s offer comes amid speculation that it is helping Hezbollah militants fight against Israel.
