Bush Confuses Morality with Hypocrisy

As the Iraqi civilian death toll rolled over 40,000 from the war he started, President Bush used his veto power for the first time to veto a bill which would’ve federally funded embryonic stem cell research. And as the president who believes in a “culture of life” congratulated himself, the PM of Lebanon desperately pleaded him to ask for a ceasefire from Israel. Ironically, Bush said he vetoed the bill because, “It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect.” To override the veto, the Senate needed to obtain a two-thirds majority vote, which it failed to do. Bush also said, “This bill would support the taking of innocent human life in the hope of finding medical benefits for others.” However, Bush fully supports the taking of innocent human life in the hope of finding financial benefits for himself.

  1. Lol, that’s the funniest picture of Bush I’ve ever seen (well, maybe the one where the turkey sticks it’s head in his crotch is funnier).

    I don’t understand why they don’t want to support stem cell research. I can understand being conservative about cultural issues, but technology? Particularly *medical* technology? What’s more immoral than letting millions die from potentially curable diseases because we don’t want to use already dead fetuses for research? This seems similar to medieval times when authorities wouldn’t let doctors dissect dead humans for research because “the body is a temple”. Very frustrating. Moralists shouldn’t be allowed to stem the flow of technology/progress.

  2. This is perfect reiteration of how this president is a mouth piece for his ultraconservative base. This administration’s rhetoric is completely off base when he says “This bill would support the taking of innocent human life.” According to the language of the bill is self:

    ” `(b) Ethical Requirements- Human embryonic stem cells shall be eligible for use in any research conducted or supported by the Secretary if the cells meet each of the following:

    `(1) The stem cells were derived from human embryos that have been donated from in vitro fertilization clinics, were created for the purposes of fertility treatment, and were in excess of the clinical need of the individuals seeking such treatment.

    `(2) Prior to the consideration of embryo donation and through consultation with the individuals seeking fertility treatment, it was determined that the embryos would never be implanted in a woman and would otherwise be discarded.

    `(3) The individuals seeking fertility treatment donated the embryos with written informed consent and without receiving any financial or other inducements to make the donation.”

    He would rather see these embryos be thrown in the trash than utilized in such a way that might save lives. Not only is that completely arrogant, but frankly its disrespectful to the miracle of creation. And in an ironic turn the only reason that embryos are being developed for invitro fertilization is because the effects of living in an increasinly polluted, chemically tainted, and lethargic environment that this administration indirectly/directly contributes to is causing americans to be sterile.

  3. @ Matt: well, i am sure they will be more usefull in the trash!

    the only 2 reasons i could come with are:
    1. He is very well educated (NOT) regarding stem cell research.

    2. he doesn’t really want a cure nor does he care about babies (if he did he would care about all the ones dying in the middleeast, they are human too!). All he cares about is that people use treatments and medication to keep his pharmacutical buddies earning money. No Pharma. companies fund “cure” researches, they fund medication researches, monitors (for diabetes) etc… but NEVER a cure, only charities fund cure researches.
