Israeli jets have dropped 23 tons of explosives in the Bourj al-Barajneh section of southern Beirut on a mosque they claim to be a bunker for Hezbollah. Dozens more people were killed by Israeli attacks the previous day in central Beirut, raising the death toll in Lebanon to 295 people. News reports from towns in south and east Lebanon confirm the loss of innocent life, particularly those of children.

Ahmed Fatfat, the Lebanese acting interior minister, said Israel was trying to destroy Lebanon’s infrastructure, not just defeat Hezbollah. “Are they turning it into a second Iraq?” he asked.

The International Red Cross has reported that they are unable to provide relief to certain areas due to Israeli bombings which have caused road closures throughout Lebanon. Villagers in southern Lebanon said food, water, and medical supplies were dwindling after roads and bridges were cut. In al-Ansariya, a Red Cross centre was destroyed by an Israeli air raid, injuring a medic. Israel’s inner cabinet said, “The intensive fighting against the Hezbollah organization shall continue.” Israeli troops have crossed over the border into Lebanon to further intensify their attacks. The Lebanese Prime Minister has said that over 500,000 people have been displaced from their homes. In a televised address to the international community he said, “I call on you to respond immediately and without reservation to our call for a ceasefire and to provide urgent international humanitarian aid.”
