The Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, says he wants to dilute Washington’s “imperialist” influence by joining the UN Security Council. Venezuela’s efforts have been endorsed by Mercosur, a customs union between Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Venezuela, which said that Venezuela would “help bring necessary balance” to the council. Becoming a full member this month, Venezuela has given Mercosur a total population of more than 250 million people, with a gross regional product of over a trillion dollars and regional trade surpassing $300 billion. Chavez has accused Washington of promoting a rival candidate and US ally, Guatemala, for a seat on the UN council to persuade Latin American countries to vote against him. Fidel Castro also made an appearance at the Mercosur summit. He signed a complementary economic accord which will benefit Cuba in its trade with Mercosur countries.

As much as I may be ideologically opposed to the policies of President Chavez, I can help but admire the “Fuck you, America” attitude he wields as he takes real economical action to improve the fortunes of Latin America. Just as I may be opposed to the social policy of Fidel Castro, I am fully aware that the abyssmal economical climate of my ancestral Cuba is a direct result of the US-led trade embargo. I even understood the reason for the embargo, but when the Soviet Union collapsed, I waited patiently for the US to realize that without the backing of the former SuperPower, Cuba is no longer really a Security Threat. That patience went unrewarded. Now, Finally, they, along with several other 3rd world Latin countries are going to get some much needed economical breathing room and potentially some progress thanks to Chavez, whose blatent disregard for the US foreign policy I can’t help but applaud.
