Two governors with the hardest names for Bush to pronounce, Governor Schwarzenegger of California and Governor Blagojevich of Illinois, have upped the ante for stem cell research. Schwarzenegger bypassed Bush’s veto by offering $150 million from his state’s general fund for grants to stem cell scientists. Democrat Rod Blagojevich also offered $5 million for similar grants in his state.
Before the veto, only a collective $72 million from five states was available along with $90 million that the National Institutes of Health had provided since 2001 for a restricted number of stem cell lines. Several other governors, including Republican Jodi Rell of Connecticut, denounced Bush’s veto. Moderate Republicans are distancing themselves from Bush, being mindful of public support for stem cell research.

I wish more states took the lead in these kinds of issues. Other issues, such as CO2 emissions, are being tackled in a more positive way at the state level than the Federal is capable of right now. As crazy as it is to have Arnie as our governor, I grudgingly admit he’s making some good decisions. Now if only he can have the GM lawsuit against California dropped for utter nonsensical whining, (Wah, there’s no way we can make cars that in 10 years would adhere to the current emissions standards of China! Waaahhhh!), I might even consider a vote for another term!
