Is Madonna Serious?

Like a watered-down Marilyn Manson concert, Madonna’s latest show has a sequence in which she appears crucified on a giant cross, wearing a crown of thorns. Muslim, Jewish, and Christian leaders are banning together in Rome against the 47-year-old pop star, who’s expected to perform there on August 6th. Father Manfredo Leone, of Rome’s Santa Maria Liberatrice church, said Madonna’s publicity stunt is, “disrespectful, in bad taste, and provocative”. Mario Scialoja, head of Italy’s Muslim League said Madonna would “do better to go home”, a sentiment echoed by a spokesman for Rome’s Jewish community.

However, Madonna defended her Christ-like portrayal by saying it forms part of an appeal to her audience to donate to AIDS charities. How exactly is still unknown. Madonna has a history of exploiting religion to gain media attention, most notably in some of her older videos and recent experimentation with Kabbalah.

So now Madonna is Jesus, and Paris Hilton is Mother Theresa? Wow, millionaires sure are pretentious these days. We might as well go the extra mile and say Jenna Jameson is Buddha. Why can’t our blonde bombshells just bow out gracefully in a flurry of pills and alcohol like they did in the 50’s and 60’s, rather than desperately tug at the pant leg of pop culture until they die on the set of an Old Navy commercial? If Madonna actually decided to say something worthwhile (and not in a fake British accent) then I might listen, but superficial ploys for album sales is all she’s ever been about. Sorry granny, come back when you want to actually contribute to the world.

  1. Haha, yeah I agree with everything you say.

  2. I personally would love Jenna Jameson to be my Buddha. How fun would the meditation sessions be?

  3. @PapaFigue
Going down the “Middle Way” would have a completely different connotation.

  4. lol, it could have been alot worse… imagine if she only wore what Jesus wore!
anyway, although it was disrepectful i don’t see what the whole fuss is about. She didnt say she is Jesus, she just “acted it” same way MEN acted jesus in films and nobody felt offended!

for me, the problem is that she DOESN’T act like Jesus. she’s hardly a respectable spokesperson for the religion. i think christians do have a right to be offended, just as vietnam vets would have a right to be offended if jane fonda were the lead actress in g.i. jane.

perhaps more importantly, i’m offended that this was a very lame skit. as i mentioned, marilyn manson and countless other rock groups have used christian imagery on stage years before this, with an actual message behind the action. perhaps i’m expecting too much from madonna, but you don’t just use a symbol that means so much to so many people without a specific reason. i don’t buy the aids excuse - it doesn’t make any sense.

  6. I have been ‘watching’ Madonna from a foresty distance since my 32 year-old daughter was 12…..Madonna Always Succeeds in achieving one Primary End…..She gets people talking to each other about very difficult and allegedly paradoxical issues……….Bravo Madonna…..doing just what a good little Leo should…getting herself noticed as a magnanimous (and occasionally martyred) way of getting us to notice each other..and thereby, to Think a bit more about humanity in general……Also….. we should all be that disciplined and healthy at 47! I would gladly have her over for a tasty vegetarian lunch.
