To show his disapproval, Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, has recalled his country’s ambassador to Israel. Up until the recent military offense against Lebanon, Venezuela has enjoyed fairly good relations with Israel. Arab and Jewish communities both reside in Venezuela, and government officials have said that the Jewish-Venezuelan community will continue to be fully respected despite Venezuela’s opposition to Israel’s war. During a televised speech on Thursday, Chavez said, “It’s hard to explain to oneself how nobody does anything to stop this horror… The Israeli elite repeatedly criticize Hitler’s actions against the Jews, and indeed Hitler’s actions must be criticized, not just against the Jews but against the world. It’s also fascism what Israel is doing to the Palestinian people … terrorism and fascism.” Already, Chavez is being labeled an anti-Semite for his criticism of Israel and current foreign policy with Iran.
