It seems as though Israeli hackers have hijacked al-Manar, a Hezbollah operated television station. Anti–Hezbollah pictures and statements were aired and could be seen by anyone who happened to still have electricity. These included pictures of corpses with captions such as, “This is the photograph of a body of a member of Hezbollah’s special forces” and “there are a large number of corpses like this on the ground and Nasrallah is hiding this truth”. Other messages referred to Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, as a liar saying “Nasrallah lies: it is not us that is hiding our losses”. Lebanese support for Hezbollah has risen dramatically in the past few weeks as a direct result to the Israeli offensive.
Regardless, the Israeli hackers still tried to gain support from the distressed Lebanese people with their transmissions. According to an Israeli news website, the Israel Defense Force Intelligence Unit, who’ve attempted to hack the station before, were responsible for the hijacking. Radio stations also proved to be susceptible to as messages like, “Hassan sent men to fight the Israeli army, an army of steel, without preparing them. Stop listening to patriotic hymns for a moment, reflect and bring your feet back to the ground” were broadcasted. Those with working mobile phones also received messages telling them that Israel’s war is aimed against Hezbollah and not civilians. However, over 90 percent of Lebanon’s 1,000 person death toll is comprised of civilians.
