Israelis Afraid to Cut and Run

The Arab League (not to be confused with the Justice League) has warned that a civil war may result from any UN resolution which does not demand the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon. Qatar’s foreign minister, Sheikh Hamad al-Thani said, “If we adopt a resolution without fully considering the reality of Lebanon we will face a civil war and, instead of helping Lebanon, we will destroy Lebanon.” Previous French-US proposals for a UN resolution have failed to demand an Israeli withdrawal, and are therefore unacceptable to Lebanon and the Arab League.

Currently, representatives from Lebanon, Israel, the UN Security Council, and the Arab League are working to draft a resolution. Israel refuses to withdraw from Lebanon until Hezbollah rockets stop firing into Israel. Meanwhile, Lebanon says the rockets are a direct response to the Israeli military offensive inside Lebanon, and will stop once Israel withdraws. The Arab League also believes the Hezbollah rocket attacks to be a legitimate response to Israeli occupation. Continued negotiations between the parties suggest that a vote on a new resolution may not happen before Thursday. The US, who is working on another UN draft with France, faces similar criticism of their Iraqi occupation which has spurred a violent resistance and civil war.

One Response to “Israelis Afraid to Cut and Run”

  1. Sounds like a bit of a conundrum.

Israel is notorious, more so than the Neo-Cons of the U.S., for saying one thing and doing another. Israel has no intention of withdrawing. Israel is fighting the Western Front for the “War on Terror.”

It’s really a genious plan that’s being implemented to thrust Syria and Iran into defensive postitions, their only leverage being each other.

Watch how this relationship grows as the Iraqi Civil war accelerates and the U.S. Troops in Iraq mobilize against, at least Iran, with Israel, most probably, heading for Damascus through Lebanon.

And… furthermore… never underestimate their patience.
