In response to the recent suspected terrorist plot in the UK, the Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff, has issued a ban of all liquids on US airlines. This ban includes everything from water to wine, with only minor exceptions: baby formula and medicine. Passengers must also be prepared to prove the contents of these allowed items by testing them in front of the security at the airport.

Such modifications will allow patrons of the airline to purchase water, soda and alcohol on the plane which may eventually aid the airlines’ struggling profit margins. All of this coming at a time when the US is in the middle of a major congressional election and politicians are jumping in to reiterate their agendas. President Bush has said this recent event proves that we are “at war with Islamic fascists.” House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said the terror plot reinforces the need to for her party to implement the suggestion of an independent 9/11 commission. Meanwhile, hundreds from the National Guard have been called in California and Massachusetts to roam major airports in their states. This is the highest level of security airlines have been on since the 9/11 attacks.
