Late Friday night, the UN Security Council passed a unanimous resolution to cease all fire between Israel and Hezbollah, and for 15,000 international peacekeepers to be deployed. Merely hours after the resolution was passed to end the bloodshed in Lebanon, Israel launched an even larger offensive, which has resulted in a total of 15 victims so far. Israeli war planes, tanks, and ground troops pushed deeper into Lebanon than ever before. Their offensive is expected to reach as far as the Litani River, just 19 miles from the Syrian border.

Israeli jets continued to wage war on civilians across Lebanon by targeting northern roads and a power plant in the major city of Sidon. The city is expected to be without power for 10 days. Avi Pazner, an Israeli government spokesman, echoed Bush’s Iraq war sentiments about making ‘time tables’ by saying, “This operation is aimed at preventing Hezbollah from firing rockets into northern Israel and is not limited in time.” The Litani River has been a strategic site for Hezbollah ever since Israel’s first occupation in 1978. Lebanese police said Israeli troops are being met with much resistance there.
