19 year old Hammasa Kohistani, the first Miss England to be Muslim, criticized Tony Blairs generalizations of Muslims. The A-level student at Uxbridge College, who speaks four languages, made it to the Miss World Finals. She accused the Prime Minister of “fuelling hostility towards Islam” and creating a “negative image” after the 7/7 London bombings by Miss England. Ms Kohistani said, “Tony Blair addressed Muslims in particular, telling them that they need to sort out the problem within. That was a huge stereotype of the Islamic community. Even the more moderate Muslims have been stereotyped negatively and feel they have to take actions to prove themselves.”

The Prime Minister placed responsibility on moderate Muslims in July, saying they should do more to tackle extremism in society. Some Muslims feel they need not apologize or be singled out for the actions of those unrelated to them and their beliefs. Others think Blairs July comment towards Muslims is hypocritical since he politically aligns himself with Christian extremists in America.

Hammasa Kohistani is determined to improve both the image and living conditions of Muslims. Her family came to the UK after fleeing the Talibans rule in Afghanistan. She is currently hoping to set up a charity to educate Afghan children.

  1. And she’s saying all that without a burka and most likely posing in a bikini for the swimsuit competition. If “moderate” muslims had their way she’s be stoned to death. Islam is a religion that’s stuck in the middle ages, it has no relevance to today’s society. Few religions do, by the way, but Islam is particularly fanatical and unbending.

there are fanatics in every religion. We burnt people alivea few centuries ago ad if you go to some conservative christian societies you will be amazed at some of the things they do. Athiests also have their extremists!

  3. How can you be an extreme atheist? That’s like being an extreme nihilist.

The trouble with Islam is that there are very specific rules in that religion, along with very specific punishments if you break those rules. It’s all layed down in the Sharia law by god himself, according to Muslims. In Christianity, there are laws and punishments, but they’re so muddled and ambiguous that they contradict each other, and as a result very few of them are followed as dogma.

It’s not a matter of there being too many extremist muslims. To be a muslim, you must be an extremist you aren’t really following your religion. There are very clear guidelines on how and when a proper muslim should dress, eat, bathe, etc. The prescription for breaking these rules is usually a few rocks to the head.

It always amazes me that Islam is the darling religion of the liberal left. I guess they see Islam as a discriminated against religion, yet if Islam had any influence over our society every principle that liberals hold would be thrown away. Believe abortion should be allowed? Islam doesn’t. What about divorce? Not in Islam. Women like wearing swimsuits and fashionable dress? Only if you consider a black bed sheet fashionable, because you’ll be raped or stoned to death if you show more than eyes.

The conservative christians in our country are bad enough, but if it was islamic fundamentalists that held sway over our government instead it would be 100 times worse.

  4. 1). All religions are “stuck in the middle ages.”

2). Anyone for anything can be a zeolot extremist

    3). Tony Blair Eats Children

i lived in Islamic countries most of my life, some are very strict and others are very liberated.
religions com with rules and as you mentioned, some take them to the etreme… Islm is just another religion and the same way christians burnt witches, went on crusades etc… Islam is just 1400 years old, so it is around the same age christianity did all the horrible things before maturing to a state of freedom (we don’t burn witches and we definatly don’t cast stones against adulterers… as for crusades, i can’t comment because i think bush is fullfilling a little fantasy of his!).
my dad is athiest and he is very peaceful but (forexample) all the racists i know are athiests too and i am talking about real racists who actually harm people. I am not saying all athiests are like that, what i am saying is rules in religions are not a bad thing, what makes them bad is people seeking control and social status. aybe i am generalising things, but i believe all religions deserve to be respected and those who don’t believe in religion should be respected too.

i believe you’re generalizing islam way too much. darkangel brings up a good point. the majority of muslim countries do have fair laws towards women. lebanon and jordan are considered very progressive, along with kuwait and the UAE. countries like iran and saudi arabia are not the norm. surely we don’t need islam to oppress women, just look at china. its odd for some to think that a once athiestic state like china would be less progressive than a muslim country like kuwait.

“How can you be an extreme atheist?”

i’ve known extremists who call themselves atheists but are really just anti-religion. in fact, the majority of atheists i know are anti-religion (maybe it’s because they’re the most outspoken atheists). just like the christian extremists, atheist extremists close themselves off to reason. they’re just the opposite side of the mirror and will argue their irrational case to the death. they’ll say all religion is bad, christianity is responsible for all wars, stupidity and religion go hand in hand, etc, etc. they bash all christians for being close minded and intolerant, yet hypocritically think that they’re intellectually superior to the majority of the world.

“The trouble with Islam is that there are very specific rules in that religion, along with very specific punishments if you break those rules. Its all layed down in the Sharia law by god himself, according to Muslims.”

you’re forgetting that there are also differences in interpretation within islam too. muslims see the word of god to be unchanging and rigid. however, what does change is their understanding of it. in this way it’s not too far from christianity in that christians see the bible as the word of god but interpret it differently depending on their denomination. I should also point out that the majority of muslim countries have a dual system of secular courts and religious courts. countries like pakistan, indonesia, and bangladesh are amongst the most populated muslim countries and have secular constitutions and laws.

“if Islam had any influence over our society every principle that liberals hold would be thrown away.”

there’s a difference between following the principles of your religion and imposing them on others. i am socially liberal, but many would consider my personal beliefs to be fairly conservative. having more muslims in our country, to which their influence would be greater than the conservative christians, does not mean that our freedoms would be taken away. that logic is almost a case to bar anyone with any sort of belief from being a lawmaker or politician. remember when JFK was running for president, everyone was afraid america would be under the control of the vatican if he won. these ideas are based on fear of religion. we need to be fearful of individuals, not beliefs.
