Afghanistan Gets a Double Dose of “War on Terror” and “War on Drugs”

As you might’ve guessed from the title, an equally unsuccessful campaign is being waged in Afghanistan alongside the “war on terror”. This year, Afghan poppy cultivation rose 60 percent, with crops yeilding 6,100 tons of opium. Opium production accounts for at least 35 percent of Afghanistan’s economy. In a country where the unemployment rate is 40 percent, many Afghans are tempted to grow opium poppies simply to feed their families. Hundreds of millions in aid have supposedly been sent to fight the opium production.

“This country could be taken down by this whole drugs problem,” Doug Wankel, the top U.S. narcotics official, told reporters. “We have seen what can come from Afghanistan, if you go back to 9/11. Obviously the U.S. does not want to see that again.”

On the contrary, if you go back to 9/11, Afghanistan’s poppy crop was nearly eradicated by the Taliban. I’m not endorsing the Taliban, but it’s obvious that the US wants to stop the opium trade as much as OJ wants to find the real killer. The drug trade has long been documented as a major source of income and tool for subversion by the US government. CIA drug funding and trafficking is not a conspiracy theory; anyone can look it up in the international press. This is exactly why we got rid of the Taliban regime. They were strict Muslims who put a halt to opium production. The US came in to create an unstable government in Afghanistan, unable to police its country. It looks like we’re back in business.
