Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has come down with a severe case of Foot in Mouth Syndrome after making racial generalizations in a tape-recorded meeting. During an apology on Friday he said that if he heard his children making similar comments, “I would be upset”. During the recording in question, Schwarzenegger spoke of State Assemblywoman, Bonnie Garcia, and speculated about her nationality. “I mean Cuban, Puerto-Rican, they are all very hot,” the governor was recorded as saying. “They have the, you know, part of the black blood in them and part of the Latino blood in them that together makes it.” Garcia, who is Puerto Rican, brushed off the remark. She told the Times, “Very often I tell him, ‘Look, I am a hot-blooded Latina.’ I label myself a hot-blooded Latina that is very passionate about the issues, and this is kind of an inside joke that I have with the governor.”
The governor often records his speechwriting sessions to keep a record of his thoughts and speaking patterns (so he doesn’t accidentally yell “it’s not a tumor!” during an important speech). On the tape, Schwarzenegger also refers to Republican legislators as a “wild bunch” and a “unique, unruly group”. Chief of Staff, Susan Kennedy, is also caught on the recordings as saying that Republican Assembly leader, George Plescia, looks like a “startled deer”. Plescia declined to comment. Democratic opponent Phil Angelides, who’s running on the Lesser of Two Evils platform, said the governor should conduct himself with dignity. In a statement, Angelides said, “once again, Governor Schwarzenegger has used language that is deeply offensive to all Californians and embarrassed our state.”

What a load of bullshit. Latino people (including Italians and Spanish) have always been called “hot blooded”, most often by themselves. Nothing racist about it, it’s just a quaint expression.

[…] Loretta Sanchez, the Democratic incumbent, who was born to Mexican immigrants, called Mr. Nguyen’s letter “disgusting”, given that Nguyen himself is an immigrant. She further stated that, “these communities have spent years trying to get naturalized immigrants to vote.” Republican leaders like Governor Schwarzenegger are now throwing Nguyen to the fire, by calling for him to quit the race, in hopes of saving their own image.
