The House has once again approved a bill, for the second time since December, which calls for a fence along the border between the United States and Mexico. The double-layered fence will cover about one third of the 2,000-mile Mexico border. Republican Peter King of New York said the fence bill was needed to show Americans “we can take meaningful action to secure the border.” The Republicans have had 6 years to do absolutely anything they wanted to do, and to date, a bill for a fence has been their most actively pursued measure for what they define as “fighting terror”. Mexico is the new Saddam. California Republican, Ed Royce, went even further to establish this link between terror and Mexico when he said, “We have to come to grips with the fact that our Border Patrol agents need a border fence on our southern border … where we’re now facing infiltration by members of terrorist organizations like Hezbollah.” Um, what?

Rightfully so, Democrats accused Republicans of playing on peoples fears. Democrat Lloyd Doggett of Texas said that they were trying to make Americans think that “Osama bin Laden is heading north in a sombrero”. Alcee Hastings, a Democrat from Florida, said, “This is nothing more than political gamesmanship in the run-up to the midterm elections. Sounds good. Does nothing.” Additionally, a fence of this magnitude would be devastating to ecosystems and human life. Based on information from the Department of Homeland Security, the fence would also cost $7 billion.

To pass that price tag under the nose of voters, Bush has associated terrorism with immigration, saying that the fence will “secure our borders” and protect Americans. Texas Senator John Cornyn said, “The choice we were presented was: Are we going to vote to enhance border security, or against it?” […]
