A recent declassified US intelligence report, “Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States”, states that the war in Iraq has made terrorism worse. However, the heroic US ambassador to Australia, Robert McCallum, does not let facts stand in the way of politics. Echoing Bush’s outright dismissal of the report, McCallum told ABC radio that, “The world community of responsible nations is far safer now than it was before the United States and its partners and allies went into Iraq.” He bases his expert assessment on the fact that terrorism predates the Iraq War. Isn’t that the same logic Republicans use to deny that humans have contributed to global warming? McCallum, who took up the ambassadorial post last month, said that terrorists have become more “energized”, but insisted that the war is actually improving the situation.
