You all know the old saying: If you can’t beat them… um, beat their friends. That seems to be the logic behind a set of sanctions signed into law by President Bush. The sanctions target countries which support Iran’s nuclear program. The measure passed both houses of Congress as Iran and the EU are engaged in negotiations. The Iran Freedom Support Act is seen as a clear challenge to Russia and China for supporting Iran’s nuclear program. Russia is currently involved in an $800 million project to help build a nuclear power plant in the city of Bushehr, and currently sells Iran weaponry. China is also accused of supplying Iran with missile technology.

Bush said in a statement, “This legislation will codify U.S. sanctions on Iran while providing my administration with flexibility to tailor those sanctions in appropriate circumstances and impose sanctions upon entities that aid the Iranian regime’s development of nuclear weapons.” Practically reading from the same speech notes in the lead up to the Iraq War, he continued, “My administration is working on many fronts to address the challenges posed by the Iranian regime’s pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, support for terrorism, efforts to destabilize the Middle East and repression of the fundamental human rights of the citizens of Iran.”

Reports by the IAEA have stated that Iran is far from enriching uranium to develop a nuclear weapon, and that part of the case against Iran is “outrageous and dishonest”. Nonetheless, Senator Norm Coleman said: “The Iranians have demonstrated that they are deceitful, obstructionist and bent on destroying Israel and all of Western civilization. We know where this path is going to lead. Aiding Iran to become a nuclear power, even inadvertently, is unacceptable.” The US may also award grants to pro-American radio and television stations in Iran which help spread its propaganda to the Iranian people.
