MIT and Hong Kong University researchers have developed a nontoxic and biodegradable liquid which may have a serious impact on medicine. When the liquid, composed of peptides, is applied to open wounds the peptides self-assemble into a microscopic barrier of gel which seals the wound and stops bleeding. After the injury heals, the gel is broken down into molecules that cells can use as building blocks for tissue repair. Rutledge Ellis-Behnke, research scientist in the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Science said, “We have found a way to stop bleeding, in less than 15 seconds, that could revolutionize bleeding control.”
Doctors have few effective methods to stop bleeding without causing damage. Currently, as much as 50 percent of surgical time is used just to control bleeding. Current tools include clamps, pressure, cauterization, vasoconstriction, and sponges. This study marks the first time that nanotechnology has been used to achieve complete hemostasis. Thanks to this liquid, surgery time could be cut in half.
Researchers are still unsure exactly why the liquid works. “It is a completely new way to stop bleeding; whether it produces a physical barrier is unclear at this time,” Ellis-Behnke said. However, they are confident that the material does not induce blood clotting, since there is no sign of platelet aggregation. Unlike other methods used for hemostasis, the new liquid can be used in a wet environment, and does not induce an immune response in those being treated. The material may be especially useful for battlefield situations where fast and reliable ways to stop bleeding could save countless lives.
