President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has vowed to defend Bolivia’s government in the event that President Evo Morales should be targeted by Western powers to be overthrown. Chavez, himself, has been the target of Washington plots. In a televised speech he said, “Venezuela will not keep its arms crossed if the Bolivian government and people are attacked from outside or within.”

The Venezuelan president verified there was a US-backed plan being implemented to impede Bolivia’s cabinet from governing effectively. This would be later used as justification to remove President Morales from office. Officials in Washington deny the allegations.

Chavez warned that Venezuela would not recognize “any government that emerges through an insurrection”. He then proclaimed that if Morales were overthrown, he would do whatever it takes to ensure that the next established government would last as long as Pedro Carmona (the interim de facto President of Venezuela who ruled for 36 hours during a short-lived coup against Chavez in 2002).
