Exxon Mobil Gets Richer For Being Crude

Texas-based Exxon Mobil is the world’s largest publicly traded oil company. The oil giant’s earnings rose to $10.49 billion in the third quarter, the second-largest quarterly profit ever recorded by a publicly traded U.S. company (the record for the first largest quarterly profit also belongs to Exxon Mobil in the fourth quarter of 2005). At this rate, experts speculate that the oil corporation might just beat its own record for the highest annual profit ever by a U.S. company. That record was also achieved by Exxon Mobil in 2005 with an annual profit of $36.1 billion.

Last year, because of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Exxon Mobil was able to milk a $100.72 billion revenue. This year, revenue for Exxon Mobil is lower than last year, though their quarterly revenue is still greater than the annual gross domestic product of the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Exxon Mobil’s oil and gas drilling activities also went up 13 percent from the previous year, and profits at its chemicals segment more than doubled.

With profits in the billions, ExxonMobil easily spends millions of dollars on propaganda each year to convince the public that global warming is a fraud. They have also played a leading role in sabotaging international attempts to stop global warming, refused to invest in clean renewable energy, and were one of the main financial contributors to George Bush’s election campaign. One of the first things Bush did as president was to pull out from international agreements to stop global warming.
