Russian Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov has said there is no evidence that Iran is pursuing any military nuclear program. However, he did urge the country to be more cooperative with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) so as to remove any doubt. “We think that Iran should not drag out the process, but show more zeal in the clarification of remaining questions… An IAEA report confirming that the Iranian nuclear program is totally peaceful will be good for Tehran,” Ivanov said.

Ivanov continued by saying Iran’s atomic ambitions should be steered by the international community towards peaceful energy projects, rather than towards nuclear weapons. He hoped that diplomacy would be able to settle the nuclear issue, referring to the partial sanctions on Iran imposed by the UN Security Council. “Russia will cooperate with other countries in this issue, but it must be clear that the main task is not sanctions but solutions.” Ivanov continued, “If the UN Security Council adopts a resolution that stipulates partial sanctions on Iran, that will be an element of political dialogue. The resolution and the sanctions are not a goal in itself.”
