Does Iran have a right to defend itself? Responding to a suggestion made by the Deputy Defense Minister of Israel that his nation may launch a military strike against Iran, Mohammad Ali Hosseini, a spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, said; “If Israel takes such a stupid step and attacks, the answer of Iran and its Revolutionary Guard will be rapid, firm and destructive and it will be given in a few seconds.”

During the press conference, Ali Hosseini also said that Iran was moving forward to expand its program to enrich uranium. The US and Israel claim that Iran’s program could be used to make nuclear warheads. In 1981, Israel bombed Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor while the country was under the leadership of Saddam Hussein. Experts say bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities will be much more difficult because Iranian sites are spread out and heavily protected.

Despite studies to the contrary, some Western politicians argue that Iran’s uranium enrichment program could be used to make material for warheads. When asked about the program, Hosseini said Iran is trying to build 3,000 centrifuges by March under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The IAEA carries out routine checks of Iran’s nuclear facilities. Currently, Iran’s centrifuges would take years to produce enough material for a single warhead.
