Palestinian and Israeli leaders say they remain committed to a Gaza ceasefire, despite 4 rockets that were fired from Gaza into Israel just hours after the ceasefire agreement took place. No injuries were reported. The militant jihad wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for the rockets because some Israeli troops remained in Gaza, despite Israel’s announcement that it had pulled out all its troops overnight. Abbas met with his security chiefs on Sunday and ordered them to send their forces to the Gaza border to prevent any more rocket attacks from breaching the ceasefire.
Today, Israeli troops killed two Palestinians in the West Bank. The soldiers were reported to have shot and killed a 22-year-old militant carrying a gun along with a 50-year-old woman who rushed to his aid. The Popular Resistance Committees militant group said, “The crime of the assassination of Abdel-Razek Baker will not pass without punishment.”
Over the weekend, Palestinian leaders agreed to stop firing rockets in exchange for Israeli troops to leave occupied Gaza. While the ceasefire conditions only apply to Gaza, the death of two Palestinians in the West Bank puts extra strain on the truce. Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said he hopes a similar arrangement can be made in the West Bank within the next few days.

[…] What’s even more shocking is that Olmert’s change of tune is said to be the result of pressure from the US to change his policy towards Palestine and restart the peace process. What’s that you say, Washington promoting peace? An Al Jazeera correspondent in occupied Gaza noticed the shift in policy, noting, “Palestinian officials say that Mahmoud Abbas has had his hand extended in peace since he was elected, but Olmert has not been receptive.” Chief Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat was ready to negotiate with Israel on a final peace deal. “We hope to also take the ceasefire to the West Bank in the next few days and we stand ready, if Mr Olmert wishes, to resume negotiations,” said Erekat.
