Bush continues to postpone an announcement on a supposed change in Iraq War policy. The president has said he is not going to be rushed into changing his failing strategy, but indicated that he may want to increase US troop levels. He has also rejected advice, which he claims supports leaving before the job is done. The White House said Bush will deliver his speech before Christmas break. Meanwhile, as the coward procrastinates to admit any wrongdoing, hundreds of people die daily in the fiasco he created.
After three years into the Iraq War, Bush says he is now finally starting to listen to the opinions of diplomatic, military, and policy advisers. Whether he follows their expertise is another matter entirely. Thus far, Bush has been dismissive of proposals to pull most of our troops by 2008, or the possibility of talking with Iran and Syria. In a successful attempt to be as vague and non-committal as possible, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, “The President’s goal and indeed his responsibility is to do precisely what he said he would do.” Rice said there would be “a new way forward” for the American people.
During a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on November 30th, the PM presented Bush with a plan for Iraqi troops to assume primary responsibility in Baghdad, with US troops being shifted to the periphery. Mowaffak al-Rubaie, Iraq’s national security adviser, said, “I think it is extremely important they reduce their visibility and they reduce their presence.” However, the Shia-led government has been either unwilling or unable to stop militias from violently clearing Sunnis out of Baghdad.
On Tuesday, General John Abizaid, the top US commander in the Middle East, and General George Casey, the top general in Iraq, asked the administration to pour increased funding into armored vehicles, body armor, and other critical equipment for the Iraqi forces as well. In Baghdad, Lieutenant General Peter Chiarelli countered Bushs suggestion that increasing troop levels would help. Rather, he said he was in favor of creating jobs for what he called Iraq’s “angry young men”, thereby weakening the insurgency. Wait, you mean there are other objects in the toolbox besides hammers?
A Pew Research Centre poll found that only one-third of Americans think the US will accomplish its goals in Iraq (whatever those goals happen to be), while 50 percent believe the Iraq War will turn into another Vietnam. American opposition to Bush and his war will continue to rise as more military families will be receiving hand-delivered American flags as Christmas presents.
