Gerald Ford died yesterday at his home in Rancho Mirage, CA. No official cause of death has been released yet. Ford is known for being the only president to never have been elected to nationwide office (unless you count George W. Bush), and for being the clumsy new neighbor on an episode of the Simpsons. He was appointed vice president in 1973 after Nixon’s vice president, Spiro Agnew, resigned to avoid prosecution. When Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment, Ford became president for 2 ½ years until he was defeated by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election.

“My family joins me in sharing the difficult news that Gerald Ford, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather has passed away at 93 years of age,” said the former first lady Betty Ford in a brief statement issued from Gerald Ford’s office. “His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country.” Ford was the longest living president, followed by Reagan, who also died at 93.
