Congressman Robin Hayes was quoted by a North Carolina paper as saying that “Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men.” He added that, “Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the savior.” Hayes was speaking to the Concord Rotary Club.

The congressman’s remarks have drawn some heavy criticism from liberal bloggers. However, Hayes claims his comments were taken out of context, and that he was simply promoting the spread of “Christian principles rather than Christianity.” Hayes’ spokeswoman, Carolyn Hern, said, “It’s interesting how these bloggers can distort the news.” It should be noted that Hern did not attend the speech either.

Even when we give him the benefit of the doubt that his initial comment was taken out of context, Hayes’ reiteration is not much better. I suggest that he be more focused on spreading those Christian values of “peace on earth” and “good will towards men” to his fellow party members, who started this war in the first place, before he tries to do so in an occupied country of people that hate us. Likewise, the assumption that Islam doesn’t teach those same values is ignorant at best. Hayes obviously doesn’t comprehend that Jesus’ teachings are an integral part of Islam, with Christ being one of the 5 major prophets.

Ultimately, I think the real group in need of a savior are such policy makers who don’t have a clue about the beliefs and attitudes of the people they decided to go to war against, let alone the contradiction between Christianity and American foreign policy.
