Martin Lee Anderson was a 14 year-old boy sent to the Bay County Sheriffs Office boot camp in Florida for a probation violation. On his first day at the camp, Anderson collapsed while exercising. He was then immediately beaten by a group of guards. A surveillance video shows as many as nine guards kneeing, punching, and dragging him around the yard. Anderson died at a hospital the next day.

After seeing the videotape of Andersons beating, his parents agreed to have his body exhumed. A medical examiner initially ruled that the juvenile died of sickle cell, but a second autopsy, which was observed by Dr. Michael Baden, indicated otherwise. Baden is a noted pathologist who has reviewed medical evidence in the slaying of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King Jr. Baden said it was clear that Anderson did not die from complications of sickle cell trait or any other natural cause, but because of the heavy beating he received the day before his death

Though the county sheriffs office admitted that mistakes were made (to put it lightly), no guards have been arrested or fired. However, the camp is currently closed, and the US Attorney’s offices in Tallahassee and US Justice Departments Civil Rights Division have opened investigations.
