Aside from Bush calling Saddam’s death a “milestone”, another less boastful milestone has been reached as a result of the war – the 3000th US soldier has died in Iraq. While the White House feigned a mournful attitude, they cautioned truly mournful Americans that there would be no quick resolution to the never-ending “war on terror”. Without breaking character, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said, “The president believes that every life is precious and grieves for each one that is lost.”

Despite increasing pressure for “the Decider” to make a good decision, Bush has shown little desire to make any change in policy. He has postponed his new strategy again, which will probably include sending more US troops to Iraq, until early next month. Bush has killed more Americans than Osama, with the December toll of 111 soldiers being the deadliest so far, and more Iraqis than Saddam, with an unknowable number being in the hundreds of thousands. Despite this bloodshed and public discontent, Mr. Bush is spending a week-long vacation at his Texas ranch.

After Saddam’s execution, Bush said, “Many difficult choices and further sacrifices lie ahead.” Insurgents loyal to Saddam then killed over 70 people from car bomb explosions. The administration argues that they are fighting to establish a “free Iraq” that can govern itself and fight the “war on terror”. “We will be fighting violent jihadists for peace and security of the civilized world for years to come,” spokesman Stanzel said.
