  • Astronomers have discovered a 10 billion trillion trillion carat diamond 50 light-years away which is larger than our moon. It was created inside the center of a white dwarf (not that kind of dwarf). Apparently astronomers are just as uncreative as anthropologists because they’ve nicknamed it Lucy after “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. Well, I guess that’s better than naming it Blingy McBling.
  • New Hounds provides us with a screen cap from Fox News on Pelosi becoming the Speaker of the House. What does the fair and balanced banner say underneath Pelosi? “100 Hours to Turn America into San Francisco”. I shit you not. Check out the pic.
  • Evan at AlterNet posted a great video taped outside of the institute associated with the PNAC (Project for a New American Century) of protestors against troop escalation. Neo-conservative think-tank is probably my favorite oxymoron of all time. What kind of “think-tank” is consistently wrong?
  • The US Army sent about 275 letters out a few days before Christmas to officers killed or wounded in action, asking that they return to active duty. Stories like this show how desperate the armed forces are for volunteers. Perhaps Bush’s new strategy for increasing troop levels has something to do with raising the dead, because a draft is just as unlikely to work. Warm up those crumpets Canada. I’m coming for breakfast.
  • KCET, a Los Angeles PBS station, linked to our post on military recruitment at their Life & Times Blog. Give them a thorough gander and support public broadcasting. That particular clip from the Simpsons has been generating quite a bit of buzz since I first posted it in early November. I’ve given the file to a few counter-recruitment types who say it’s a great attention grabber, distracting kids from the light show they have at the actual recruitment booths.
