Audio tapes from meetings with Saddam Hussein and his incriminatingly-named cousin, “Chemical Ali”, reportedly catch the two engaging in a conversation about killing thousands of people with the chemical weapons they obtained from western allies. On the tapes, the two men talk about testing the weapons on thousands of innocent people before using them on the Kurds in 1988. Suspiciously, prosecutors did not explain who ordered the recordings and when or why they were made. Court officials could not elaborate either.

The tapes read like the script of a horrible soap opera in which the actors restate their plans to each other in order to catch the audience up to speed. A voice, claimed to be Chemical Ali by prosecutors, says, “I will strike them with chemical weapons and kill them all. Who is going to say anything? The international community? A curse on the international community!” Another voice, which prosecutors say was that of Saddam, is heard on another tape saying, “Yes, it’s effective, especially on those who don’t wear a mask immediately, as we understand.” A voice then asks, “Sir, does it exterminate thousands?” The supposed voice of Saddam answers, “Yes, it exterminates thousands and forces them not to eat or drink and they will have to evacuate their homes without taking anything with them, until we can finally purge them.” It is unknown whether Saddam was also stroking a cat during his diabolical monologue.
