In Lakhanow, India, which is mostly populated by Sunni Muslims, everyone is naming their newborn boys Saddam Hussein. The name was hardly used prior to the first US war against Iraq in 1991. Now that Saddam has been executed, more than 120 boys in Lakjanow and its surrounding villages have been honored with Saddam Hussein as their John Hancock. One villager, Ejaj Alam, explained, “This is our way to pay tribute to our leader. We want to carry on his legacy here at least in our village.” Alam admits that naming so many children Saddam Hussein has led to some confusion. “In the playground we have Saddam Hussein running after Saddam Hussein, behind Saddam Hussein who is ahead of Saddam Hussein but too far from Saddam Hussein … it can all get a little confusing,” he said.
