A bill has been approved by the House which would loosen current restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research imposed by President Bush in 2001. The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which would allow federal funding of research on stem cells from embryos slated for destruction, was passed by 37 Republicans and 216 Democrats. Assuming the same bill is passed in the Senate, Bush has promised that he will veto the legislation as he has done in the past. The bill would’ve needed 37 more votes to override Bush’s forthcoming veto.

Currently, federal funds may only be used to study stem cells taken from embryos destroyed before Aug. 9, 2001, or on 21 of the nearly 400 stem cell colonies created since 1998. The House bill would have expanded the pool of available cells to include the thousands of embryos thrown away by fertility clinics every year. Meanwhile, Bush claims to be promoting a “culture of life” by allowing those embryos to go to waste as he sends more Americans to die in Iraq. Presently, there is no other person in the world who posses a greater threat to a “culture of life” than Bush himself.
