- One of the major stories today is President Hugo Chavez being given the power to rule by decree for 18 months. Regular readers to the blog know I’ve agreed with Chavez on just about everything up until now. Knowing that absolute power corrupts absolutely, this new measure makes me worry that the Bolivarian Revolution will fizzle into totalitarianism like so many before. Though on the plus side, Chavez’s been generous to the poor across the globe and never tortured detainees in an illegal war. Whatever happens, we can be assured that many corporate boats will sink in Venezuela’s rising red tide.
- In the UK, a white teenage girl was segregated from her classmates because her hair was braided. However, several black students at the school are allowed to wear their hair in braids or dreadlocks. Is this an example of a racist double standard, or just an attempt by the school to prevent their students from looking stupid?
- Mostafa Tabatabainejad, the UCLA student who was racially profiled and tasered in an on-campus library for not showing his student ID, is pursuing legal action. As in this situation, taser equipment is often used unnecessarily by law enforcement and security officers subjects who pose no threat. Hopefully he wins the case and some good comes out of this.
- Evan has an interesting blog where he does a different project each month. For November he vowed to survive by spending only $30 on food for the entire month. He documents his daily struggle in an entertaining manner. A good read.
- She wore a not so itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny burkini. Yes, the “burkini” (basically a wetsuit) is here for traditional Muslim women who have trouble swimming in full length dresses. And now the award for the avid beachgoer least likely to get skin cancer goes to…
