Earlier in the week, Pakistan’s military said it conducted an airstrike on suspected al-Qaeda compounds in the village of Zamzola. However, villagers reported that an unmanned US drone carried out the attack. Journalists who were escorted to Zamzola were shown an unexploded missile about 6.5 feet long with the inscription “MFP AMF YORK 0873”. Such a missile could not have been fired from helicopter gunships as the Pakistani military claims, nor could it have been dropped from an unmanned US drone as some villagers claim. Jalindar Khan Kikari, a villager, offered his own eyewitness testimony of what happened. “This attack was basically carried out with five missiles fired by a Predator. The helicopters came in later and attacked,” he said. Another villager confirmed that the missiles were fired from a distance minutes before the Pakistani helicopters arrived.

Another point of contention rests with the victims of the raid. Pakistani intelligence officials say they killed up to 20 al-Qaeda fighters, yet there were no troops on the ground to confirm the number or identity of those killed. Local villagers say that only civilians were killed in the attack. Awaz Khan, whose son and nephew were killed, told Reuters, “No foreigner or Afghan was killed in this attack. Only laborers from Mehsud and Salmanzai tribes were killed.”
