In his response to the State of the Union address, Senator Webb mentioned something Bush didn’t – Katrina. In my opinion, a New Orleans resident would provide us with greater insight into the state of our Union than a president who has proven himself to be so disconnected with America.
Nevertheless, President Bush did make his address, and Senator Webb gave that address a much needed reality check. The two main topics Webb went on to highlight were the economy and foreign policy. He spoke sincerely about the widening gap between rich and poor, mentioning that workers make less in a year than their bosses make in a day. Webb was not afraid to point out that wages and salaries were at an all-time low, and that the majority of the wealth was becoming increasingly condensed amongst the upper percentile. These are realities that even few Democrats have had the nerve to speak about.
During his State of the Union speech, Bush managed to mention September 11th 5 times, Iran 5 times, and al-Qaeda 10 times, all in reference to Iraq. However, Webb decided not to even dignify such fearmongering and misinformation with a response. Instead, he focused on the mismanagement of the war, and the need for new leadership. Under this new Democratic leadership, Webb promised that diplomacy would be exercised instead of war. He was obviously referring to Iran.
Webb didn’t just bitch about how wrong the president was. Instead, he offered some degree of hope to America that even though the president was a failure, that fact will no longer be consequential. Webb took up responsibility, assuring us that the Democrats would now take the lead regardless of Bush’s willingness to cooperate.
Webb’s closing statement: “Tonight we’re calling on this president to take similar action in both areas. If he does, we will join him. If he does not, we will be showing him the way.”
