Republican Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, has issued an order making it mandatory for schoolgirls to get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. Perry sidestepped opposition in the Legislature by employing an executive order that girls entering the sixth grade in September 2008 be required to receive Gardasil, Merck & Co.’s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Governor Perry also ordered that Medicaid offer the vaccine to women ages 19 to 21, and directed state health authorities to make the vaccine available free to girls 9 to 18 who are uninsured or whose insurance does not cover vaccines.
However, before we break out the champagne, let’s take a good look at why Perry made HPV vaccinations mandatory. Merck has been bankrolling efforts to pass state laws across the country mandating Gardasil for girls as young as 11 or 12. In Texas, it has doubled its lobbying budget and funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group of female state legislators from around the country. One of Merck’s three Texas lobbyists is Governor Perry’s former chief of staff. His current chief of staff’s mother-in-law, Texas Republican state Dianne White Delisi, is a state director for Women in Government. In addition to those ties, Merck contributed $6000 to Perry’s re-election campaign.
A federal government advisory panel recommended that all girls get the shots at 11 and 12, before they are likely to be sexually active. Merck could make billions of dollars if Gardasil, currently costing $360 for the three-shot regimen, were made mandatory across the country. A spokeswoman for Merck refused to say how much the company is spending on lobbyists or how much it has donated to Women in Government. Susan Crosby, the group’s president, also declined to specify how much the drug company gave. Members of Women in Government have introduced many of the bills across America in favor of mandatory HPV vaccination, so it may be more than a coincidence that a top official from Merck’s vaccine division sits on the group’s business council.
The Texas Legislature has no authority to repeal Perry’s order, and is effective until Perry or a successor changes it. Dawn Richardson, president of Parents Requesting Open Vaccine Education, says Perry is “circumventing the will of the people.” I’m inclined to agree. While I am not opposed to the HPV vaccine in general, I am opposed to it being mandatory. This move seems to have been made in Merck’s best interest, rather than for the welfare of the people. All citizens should have the right to make their own health care choices. Sadly, mandatory vaccination has gained widespread support under the guise of feminism and sexual health. In my opinion, the state is committing assault by foisting unwanted procedures upon our bodies. Some of my fellow liberals may disagree. What do you think?

I guess the big question in this case is whether or not it helps the community. Will the vaccination help girls resist cervical cancer when they eventually become sexually active? If yes then it doesn’t matter who benefits, aside from the public. There’s always some asshole making money on any transaction, it’s just a matter of human nature that there’s always a leach involved. As long as it helps people resist cancer I’m for it. Fuck the bastards who profit from disease and suffering, though.

Though I don’t believe there are any serious side effects with the HPV vaccine, I’m weary of the government making anything mandatory, especially when billions of dollars are involved. The US government has acknowledged to performing forced sterilizations on unaware black participants (I believe in the 60’s), and have practically poisoned military and civilian test subjects in the past. I don’t blame people for not wanting to be injected with something they’re not familiar with. Again, I’m not against the HPV vaccine, but generally speaking, vaccines are thought by some to hurt as many people every year as they help.

I have to wonder how large was the stack of money under the table with Governor Perry’s name on it?

Here is the problem with this “vaccine”. A vaccine should, once given, such as the ones for measles, mumps, etc. , lasts for ones lifetime and rarely has to be given twice. This “vaccine” only lasts for 4 1/2 years. This “vaccine” is NOT like the other vaccines that are required when your a child in the way that it doesn’t last your entire life, and It DOES NOT prevent the virus anyway, you can still get it even after the vaccine is given and no I am not talking about a percent that it doesn’t work for like with chicken pock patients, where a small percent can still get it, I mean you can still get HPV no matter what the percent because there is SO MANY types this vaccine does not cover.
First let me go into HPV, genital warts. There are over 120 different types of this virus, 120! Of those over 37 are transmitted through sexual contact. Also, 19 are labeled the “High Risk” HPV types. These are the ones that “Could” lead to Abnormal Cervical Cells, that then if untreated “could” lead to cervical cancer. Of those 19 high risk types that could lead to cervical cancer, this “vaccine” only prevents TWO, yes only 2 types of HPV. HPV16 and HPV18 are the ONLY TWO this vaccine prevents out of the 19 high risk types. It also prevents two more types, HPV6 and HPV11 BUT these two are not in the high risk group that “could” lead to cancer, these are two of the 120 that form genital warts. So, long story short, 116 other HPV types DO circumvent the vaccine!
Furthermore, this “vaccine” was still labeled “experimental” as recently as 2003. It only last, as I stated before, for 4 1/2 years. A yearly pap smear, since they made it public that it is a very effective way of catching ‘pre-cancerous cells” and dramatically reduces the incidence of invasive cervical cancer, is still going to be the most effective way to catch cervical cancer before it develops. The drug company that makes the vaccine said itself that because this vaccine only stops 2 of the 120 types that are currently known, that the patient will STILL have to get a yearly pap smear to watch for pre-cancerous cells or abnormal pap smears. Also it states that it will not help or work on women that have HPV present at the time of the vaccine, and that you can still get HPV after the vaccine because it doesn’t treat the majority of the virus types. They also stated that “when” the vaccine leaves your body, which they “think” is 4 1/2 years by a study they did (which was in 2002) you can again catch the 4 it prevented. The study, which was done in 2002, also could not tell us what if any effects there would be on young girls long term (or women in general for that matter, but it clearly read “young girls”), which in laimens terms means that they are not sure if it will end up causing damage to these girls when they are older, such as birth defects, sterility for the girls or any other side effect that will not present til later in life. This has been done before with other medications that were told to women would be safe to take, which later resulted in birth defects for their unborn children.
I am for someone deciding to take this “vaccine” after researching it and understanding that long term side effects are still unknown because the study is only 4 years into its own research and they are still currently monitoring the women that took the vaccine. To force our young girls to take a “vaccine”, that in the future may show us that the Governor of Texas (who did this for monetary gain from the drug company to his campaign) has now lead a movement that has sterilized America’s young girls who we, as a nation, taught that because they are American, that they are free to have a choice about their own life. What have we, Americans come to if we are forcing our children to get a vaccine that is not anything like the other ones that they get as a child because it doesn’t really prevent this virus OR any cancers?
So what is the point in getting this “vaccine”, besides the pharmaceutical company making money to give to more of the government officials that are either on the board of the company or has been given money to help their campaigns? This drug may prevent 2 high risk types (out of 19) and 2 types that cause warts(out of over 120) but it only does for 4 yrs. it may cause horrible long term side effects that are still unknown, and getting a yearly pap smear (which you are told you still have to do) is more effective at preventing cervical cancer by early detection. This is not a cure for cancer, and god only knows if, years after taking it, will it itself be found to cause cancer.

well, is just really creepy to hear this vaccine is mandatory! After all i’ve heard about it.I think this vaccine would only make young girls feel more free to have unprotected sex. i still wonder how serious the side effects could be,if any.

I’m kind of with Kaziglu on this one. If the government is willing to make the investment into the health of women, as the state government appears to be in this case, then I say it’s a good investment. Kelly’s point is also valid; this vaccine doesn’t last forever. So my question would be whether the government is willing to subsidize continued treatment, or if this is just a one time thing, thereby leaving the girls to fend for themselves in 4 1/2 years.
If the latter is true, then I have issue with this mandate.

Yes, I think it is the best thing to do because around this time these girls get outrageous. They start to fight their momma over some little boy. If you ask me it is not even worth it.

I am frankly surprised that, with the exception of Kelly, none of you seem to understand what’s at stake here. Even cursory research into the history and dangers of vaccines should sound serious alarm bells regarding the health effects that are far more disturbing than the obvious greed motive of this whole affair.
A few years ago, our government ordered, and had manufactured, 280 million “smallpox” vaccines, which were then going to be forced upon every man, woman and child in this country. I did considerable research and discovered that, like most, if not all, vaccines, this vaccine would do nothing to prevent disease, but it would cause massive and horrendous side effects, including, by the government’s own estimates, the immediate death of 70,000 people. My own research indicated that approximately 144 million people would have serious, deforming or life-threatening reactions to the vaccine.
Americans do not realize how close they came to being medically exterminated, much as our own troops have been with the Gulf War vaccines. The only thing that saved us was that they ordered medical personnel to take this vaccine first, and in an unprecedented rebellion that should have been front page news, the medical establishment refused, even though, as I recall, it had then recently been made a felony to do so. For once the medical profession saved us from the harmaceuticals.
The story was quietly put to bed so that nobody would do the research I did, which indicated that the medical establishment has known this vaccine to be dangerous as well as useless since it was created by a quack by the name of Jenner (who knew less science than any 8th grade biology student) in the 18th century.
The CDC website has removed the horrifying photographs they once had in training modules that I saw in my original research, but check out what little remains deeply hidden at http://www.bt.cdc.gov/training/smallpoxvaccine/reactions/adverse.html and see for yourself an example of the glories of vaccination that we never hear about.
Do your research on vaccines. And ask yourself why the government would want to mandate a vaccine they knew would kill more Americans than 911, Vietnam, WWI, WWII and the Civil War combined.

@theshiznit:
OK, apparently you have no idea how disease works. The Smallpox vaccine does nothing to prevent disease? Is that why Smallpox, which is an airborne and highly virulent potential epidemic is all but eradicated, and the only place it exists now is in military bio-weaponry stores? How many cases of Polio have you heard of in the last 30 years?
And as far as the adverse side effects of many vaccines, yes, I will agree that the smallpox vaccine is very dangerous. But you know what else is dangerous? GETTING SMALLPOX!!
Again, apparently you have no idea how the immune system works. Most of the symptoms of any given disease are not actually caused by the disease itself, but rather by your body’s immuno response. This is why, to many people, the Flu vaccines actually “cause” them to get the Flu. They don’t actually have the flu, but because their bodies’ happen to react so strongly to the vaccine, they get all the symptoms of the flu.
Everyone’s immune system is different, and yes, there is a small percentage of people who’s immune system literally kicks into overdrive when something like the Smallpox vaccine is introduced. And while the percentage of adverse reactions is incredibly low, Even in people without serious immuno responses are still permanently scarred by the proceedure. So yes, it’s dangerous, and involves a level of risk, But you know what else is risky? GETTING SMALLPOX!!
You know, like exactly what would happen to MILLIONS of people if they actually contracted the disease? Just like exactly what happened to millions of Native Americans in Mexico and the Southern States in the years following Columbus?
Needless to say, I think your “research” is alarmist to say the least. As proof of this, I shall call attention to your very last statement:
“…why would the government want to mandate a vaccine they knew would kill more Americans than 911, Vietnam, WWI, WWII, and the Civil War Combined?”
If you did any research at all, you should know that, for the HPV vaccine, (you know, the original point of the post), there is No Such Record nor Evidence of such a side effect.
And as one friendly piece of advice, if you’re going to use and promote propaganda, don’t do what the Republicans do. The less blatent and idiotic your argument sounds, the better. Really!

If you google “Texas Medicaid pap smear” or “Texas Medicaid HPV vaccination” you will find my expanded comment titled Texas Adult Medicaid BAIT AND SWITCH.
to capsulate… That if it were legislated that it was a felony for a 6th grade girl to have sex, prosecute, convict, and imprison until 18. The taxpavers could save $300,000,000.00. I am sure the teaching of abstinence would be much more effective.
