The Iranian Fars news agency reported Saturday that “giant achievements” would be revealed on February 11th by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The president’s “administration is going to publicize the country’s remarkable progresses and achievements within the coming days,” the news agency said. “The Iranian president also reiterated that February 11 is the day when the Iranian nation’s inalienable right to access and use nuclear technology will be established. The Iranian nation will celebrate stabilization and establishment of its nuclear rights during the Ten-Day Dawn.” The Ten-Day Dawn marks the anniversary in Iran of the Islamic Revolution which took place in 1979.

One of these “great achievements” is expected to be a cure for AIDS. The news agency claims that after seven years of “arduous work”, scientists in Iran have developed an herbal cure for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). During a ceremony, Iran’s Minister of Health Kamran Bagheri Lankarani claimed, “The drug named ‘IMOD’ is completely effective and safe with no proven side effects.” In September, Lankarani said that the formula has clinical effects on patients for a guaranteed two-year term, compared to other medicines which are only effective while being administered, yet could not say if the results would last a lifetime.

If the treatment does turn out to be a cure, lasting a lifetime, it would be a great accomplishment. Currently, the non-nuclear state it’s being threatened by Israel and the United States with nuclear warfare. A genuine cure, or even slightly better treatment for AIDS, could have the power to change Iran’s situation. Iran would have humanitarian leverage, and the image of an Islamic Republic steadily progressing towards the development of a nuclear bomb would be shattered. What would it say to the citizens of the world if a third-world country like Iran could put enough money into finding a cure for AIDS when first-world countries like the US and Israel are busy spending their budgets on warfare? For that reason, and for hopes of eliminating a disease currently killing millions, I pray Iran isn’t simply blowing smoke.

One Response to “Has Iran Developed a Cure for AIDS?”

  1. Call me skeptical, but I’ll believe that one when I see it. (I’m guessing Feb 11th will come and go just like any day, because the chances of a 3rd world country developing the cure for AIDs while the whole developed world has been spending billions on it for 30 years is unlikely).
