  • With news about a cure for AIDS, I thought I’d also bring you news of a cure for cancer. This story got some news coverage awhile back, but it slipped through the cracks on this blog. DCA is a small molecule used to treat mitochondria in several types of cancer cells. So far things look very promising. With these new discoveries popping up, 2007 might not be so bad afterall (unless I just jinxed it).
  • Our favorite place in the world, Wal-Mart, has been paying itself rent for tax breaks. They’ve avoided paying hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes using this strategy. Seeing how much we worship Wal-Mart in America, perhaps they do deserve tax exempt status. The average person probably spends more than an hour a week in there already.
  • Crooks and Liars brings us this delightful video of US soldiers playing bumper cars down a busy street in Iraq. Talk about winning hearts and minds. Yes, there’s nothing which will win an Iraqi over more than an occupying power literally throwing its weight around by bulldozing locals out of its way. The alarming thing is that most vehicles pull to the side before being nudged, as if they know what’s coming and this kind of abuse is a common occurrence.
  • Here’s a bit of a surprise. Gideon Ezra, the environment minister of Israel, is calling for the release of a Palestinian leader who was jailed for killing five people. Ezra believes the prisoner, Marwan Barghouti of the Fatah movement, is the only person capable of uniting the clashing Palestinian factions. Ironic that Israel has meddled in Palestinian affairs for decades to cause division, and now they want to meddle in order to create unity.
  • AlterNet brings us a great article by Howard Zinn about how remembering the grassroots movements in our nation’s history could energize calls for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney. The case is already there. All we need is to take action through a popular upheaval of the current government.
  • Feingold, an actual liberal, is critical of his fellow Democrats for being too “middle-of-the-road” to do what needs to be done. Even with power over Congress, these spineless politicians are afraid to act. Meanwhile, at least 100 people die violently in Iraq every day. What are those posers waiting for? Feingold ought to stage a coup with Webb. Perhaps we’d get off our asses for a courageous leader like him.
