Colbert dissects the Douglas Feith story, which isn’t getting nearly enough coverage. Feith served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and basically made up false information to allow for this great economic opportunity we call the Iraq War. Colin Powell once called Feith’s operation the “Gestapo” office because it amounted to a separate, unchecked authority within the Pentagon. Still, it’s obvious that he was not acting alone, and that this agenda belonged to those higher up. I would call Feith a scapegoat if he were actually being charged with anything. Luckily for him and the Bush administration, lying isn’t against the law. Well, not unless you lie about an “inappropriate” relationship with an intern. And in case you were wondering, Feith also had back-channel meetings concerning Iran.
Colbert’s Money Quote: “Putting al-Qaeda in Iraq may have taken some imagination back then, but thanks to inappropriateness, you made it a reality.”

” Luckily for him and the Bush administration, lying isn’t against the law.”
In particular circumstances, lying IS against the law.
See Libby, Scooter prosecution.

@Philboyd Studge
Of course it’s against the law. My point was that the law is not always enforced. Whether it’s gitmo or the lead up to the war, the common finding is, “we’ve found ourselves to be not guilty”.
