The Heated Smear Campaign Against Al Gore

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a conservative group critical of Al Gore’s movie, have announced that Gore’s mansion consumes more energy per month than the average American household does in a year. Despite the fact that we’re talking about a highly secured mansion rather than an average American house, the group is inconveniently overlooking some truths.

Utility records have been cited to show that Gore paid a monthly average of about $1,200 last year. Not mentioned by the conservative “think-tank” (which is a bit of an oxymoron) is the fact that the former-vice president’s costly bills are due in part to his participation in a “green power program,” in which he’s been purchasing enough green power to balance 100 percent of his electricity consumption.

Gore also drives a hybrid and is renovating his house by installing solar panels. He claims he is leading a carbon-neutral lifestyle by investing money in projects to counteract other carbon emissions. Another interesting fact is that the Nashville Electric Service claims they never gave the Tennessee Center for Policy Research any information regarding Gore’s electric bill, nor have they ever received a request.

Nonetheless, what’s most important to remember is that Gore’s lifestyle is irrelevant. His message and related work on global warming would not be any less true or noble if he were powering a sixteen-wheeler by burning tires and kittens for fuel. Still, in this case it does seem that the Tennessee Center for Policy Research is the one truly polluting the atmosphere by taking aim at the messenger over political reasons.

  1. Here is my email to the president of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research

    February 28, 2007

re: Your transparent “news release” about Al Gore’s electric bill

    Mr. Drew Johnson, president:

Well, another conservative “think tank” has joined the ranks of the so-called ‘Swiftboat’ neoconservative Bush administration misinformation mouthpieces. In all my years I have never seen such ham-handed and obvious smear tactics, and that is saying something.

Several quotations from “Gore a hypocrite over power bill” By Kristin M. Hall, Associated Press Writer on Tuesday Feb. 27, 2007 clearly demonstrate your bias and suggest your group might be ‘truth-challenged’ as well.

For instance, “We wanted to see if he was living by his own recommendations and walking the walk,” said Drew Johnson, president of the think tank that pushes for conservative economic issues.

Your intentions had NOTHING to do with seeing whether or not Mr. Gore was “…walking the walk”. What it had to do with is your churlish attempt to support the ridiculous assertions by the Bush administration and neoconservatives everywhere, like yourself, that if there is global warming then it certainly can have nothing to do with certain actions of ‘homo modernus Americanus’ in their endless rape of our environment in the headlong search for profit and power.

In the vein of you and your “think tank” being either ‘truth-challenged’ or plain stupid, Ms. Hall of the AP said you stated: “it’s unclear whether global warming is caused by humans, and he said the threat outlined in Gore’s documentary is exaggerated”. Never mind the fact that our own government’s researchers along with other real scientists worldwide have been explaining in little words that even George W. Bush could grasp that man’s activities are the main cause of global warming.

In the vein of dishonesty, where did you get your figures on the power bills of Mr. Gore? Since, “…electric company spokeswoman Laurie Parker said the utility never got a request from the policy center and never provided them with any information”. In the interest of honesty I think you and all of those at your organization should provide to the public your utility bills and documented efforts of you and those in your organization to save energy.

In relation to Mr. Gore’s efforts to lead a carbon neutral lifestyle Ms. Hall of the AP said: “Johnson said those efforts were unconvincing”.

It seems clear to me that what is unconvincing is everything that I have been able to determine about you, your ‘think tank’ and its stated purpose (from your web site):

“The Tennessee Center for Policy Research is an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization dedicated to providing concerned citizens, the media and public leaders with expert empirical research and timely free market policy solutions to public policy issues in Tennessee.”

Sir, I find this statement unconvincing. And, for your information there IS NO free market any more in the so-called global economy and that total lack of freedom is by design.

In the same AP article Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider said “Sometimes when people don’t like the message, in this case that global warming is real, it’s convenient to attack the messenger”. It is ever so apparent that you and those of your ilk don’t like the message nor do you like the messenger. Such clear and exceedingly kind words of truth to describe your attack on Mr. Gore by Ms. Kreider speak volumes about those whom they represent. Your side did not fare so well in the comparison.

Know this Sir! You and all those like you who serve only money and power have been unmasked. Finally, most of the American people have begun to see how systematically they have been misled and lied to in the name of ‘free’ markets, global economy, ‘free’ trade and all the other elements of the New World Order that all lead only to the further enslavement of free people everywhere. The jig up!

  3. @ Manila Ryce

I have yet to receive either an acknowlgement of or an answer to my email to these reprobates at TN Center for Policy Research.

What could they possibly say? They know they are bought-and-paid-for neocon spin masters and a conduit of disinformation for the likes of Cheney, Rice and their hand puppet G Dubya Bush.

Thank God that these ‘people’ haven’t gotten wise to the fact that the jig is up and they are as obvious as a magician’s ‘forced’ card in one of their illusions.

May people who have served as the handmaidens of the corporatists/fascists that are the actual government of the US today get EVERYTHING that’s coming to any traitor.

Dwight David Eisenhower warned us of these people all those many years ago. Unfortunately, America’s memory span is measured in 10 second ’sound bites’.

I welcome their response…boy, do I ever welcome an opportunity to out a liar.
