  • Major General George Weightman was recently fired from his job as head of Walter Reed Army Medical Center after reports in the media exposed an infestation of rodents, roaches, and the deteriorating structure of the hospital itself. So after years of possible knowledge of the situation, the government has finally taken action. Better late than never, I guess. I wonder if FEMA needs a new head now that Weightman is job searching.
  • This just in: The secretary of the US Army, Francis Harvey, has also “resigned” today over the substandard treatment of vets at Walter Reed.
  • A New York Times/CBS News poll has revealed that the majority of Americans believe the federal government should guarantee healthcare for its citizens, and that they would pay higher taxes to do it. Nearly half of those insured said their employer had cut back on benefits or required them to pay more in recent years. The poll also showed that only 24 percent were satisfied with Bush’s handling of healthcare, and were willing to pay an extra $500 a year for national health coverage.
  • Switzerland accidentally invaded Liechtenstein after 170 soldiers got lost in a night march and ended up 1.2 miles across the border before turning around. Liechtenstein doesn’t have an army, but its small size makes it extremely difficult for foreign forces to find and invade.
  • A Palestinian-born imam in the US was sentenced to eight years in prison for giving support to the democratically-elected Hamas group, which the US considers a terrorist organization. During the time the imam provided financial support to Hamas, the International Red Cross released a report, expressing concern over the humanitarian rights abuses implemented on the Palestinian people by Israel, insisting that the Fourth Geneva Convention be implemented in the occupied territories. Gregory Jones, an FBI agent, said of the imam, “It is very disturbing to see people in the United States who are so willing to offer their assistance to known terrorist organizations.” Of course, Jones was referring to Hamas as a known terrorist organization, not the Israeli or US government.
  • Jose Padilla, the American citizen who was tortured for years in a Navy prison and described as being “like a piece of furniture” by staff members, was ruled mentally competent to stand trial on terrorism charges by US District Court Judge Marcia Cooke. Two doctors examined Padilla and found him mentally incompetent while a Bureau of Prisons doctor deemed him anti-social but fit for trial. Padilla’s lawyers argue that the years of torture during his interrogation merit dismissal of the charges, constituting “outrageous conduct”, and say their client hasn’t been able to provide one bit of information they can use to prepare for trial.
