The first story in today’s connect reminded me to post this video. I’ve been waiting for the proper occasion.
Depressing as hell? Yes, but such is life. Mr. J Medeiros’ “Constance” has become my new favorite song. I’ve had it on repeat for many days. His ability to paint a scene and portray the motives behind the evils of a little known world are reminiscent of an earlier time in hip-hop history when songs illuminated social problems, and were not simply a platform to establish one’s rank. To show your support, download the entire album online for $9 from his Myspace page.
The Philippines has a high rate of child prostitution. Many sex establishments in the Philippines are backed by Japanese capital, and are the favored destinations of pedophiles from America, Australia, and Europe. Children may work up to 20 hours a day, and be forced to service up to 100 customers a week. A 2005 estimate reveals that 150,000 young girls, some as young as six years old, work as prostitutes in the Philippines due to poverty. Most prostitutes work to support parents and siblings. Over half say they conduct their work “with a heavy heart”, and 20 percent say they are tormented because they “still considered sex with customers a sin.”

Having been to PI, I heard about such things that the article has talked about. And on the plane ride over from SFO, I met a military man, who was once stationed in north PI, north of Manila, where the largest concentration of U.S. military personal in PI resides. Seeing as though, myself, my travel partners, and some random white girl, were the only non-filipinos on the plane, this military man asked me, ever so bluntly, if I was going to PI for the pussy.
I told him no. He told me I was missing out. He’d stop over in PI, then to Thailand, where he described the women as, “They can fit in the palm of your hand.” He explained to me that for a couple of bucks, maybe a few tanks of gas at the most you could keep the girls for an entire weekend.
While in PI, there were local whore houses in about every town. Where we stayed, these whore houses were marked with “Navy Boat” signs. The little anchor with a sailor’s hat, painted in blue and white. We were told that the element was relatively safe. But where we were wasn’t the most densely populated island of them all and I would imagine that in Manila or Palawan, these prostitution rings occur, most likely with the parents acting as lead pimps and madams.

@yazo
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve never been to the Philippines myself, but Filipino friends of mine describe the situation in a similar way. Yet, another case of the increasing polarization between rich and poor. I’ve heard that prostitution is highest just before school tuition fees are due, and that some businessmen from Japan, America, Europe, and Australia will plan their trips around school schedules.

Makes sense — I was staying on the island, Leytte, which is where MacArthur Landed. We got to go see the hill the American’s captured. Climb up to the top and take pictures next to little statue men. There’s a huge golden memorial, oversized by a few feet, on the beach, actually in the water, which I thought was cool.
I figured I’d share that with this American audience. A nice shrine to an intelligent, sensible general and good free mason. :-)

@Yazo
My great-grandfather on my Filipino side actually got a letter of thanks from MacArthur. During the war he ran a bar that Japanese generals would frequent during the day. At night he’d close up and lead a group armed with machetes to free US POWs. He’d keep the Americans in the basement while servicing the Japanese and obtaining info up top. Go back a generation or two before and I’m sure I’ve probably got relatives who fought against the US.
