A new war spending bill would require US combat troops to withdraw from Iraq by August of 2008… well, we think. As Stewart explains, the dates and benchmarks are a bit ambiguous, even for Congress. And some of you thought incompetence was an exclusively Republican trait. Also worthy of a stomach turn is Cheney’s intro at the AIPAC convention in which he was greeted as a liberator by the pro-war lobby.

Due to pressure from pro-Israel lobbies, namely AIPAC, House Democrats have dropped a provision from the spending bill which would have required congressional approval before the president could declare war on Iran. Isn’t that what the Constitution says already? Someone should tell the Democrats to use the power they already have instead of begging for permission from Bush and Israel. Regardless, it seems Pelosi and the gang was worried enough about Israel (which literally has hundreds of nuclear weapons) being annihilated by Iran that they were willing to turn their backs on what their constituents wanted. But just to be fair, they’re only saying Bush can declare war on Iran if he really really wants to. And just like the lead-up to the Iraq War, Israeli politicians and American Neocons couldn’t be happier.
